BOSTON, MA – Prior to tonight’s game against the Minnesota Twins, the Boston Red Sox recalled infielder Deven Marrero from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman was optioned to Pawtucket following last night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Marrero, 26, is making his second major league stint of the season after being recalled from April 6-11 without appearing in any major league games. He has played 19 games with the PawSox this season, going 12-for-71 (.169) with four runs, three doubles, and four RBI. Workman, 28, pitched three scoreless innings in last night’s 8-3 loss to the Orioles, his first major league appearance since 2014. He has not allowed a run in eight innings over four appearances with the PawSox this season, going 1-0 and converting his only save opportunity. The right-hander has held minor league hitters to a .042 batting average in 2017, surrendering only one hit in 24 at-bats with 11 strikeouts and one walk.
